Transforming a Former Restaurant into Contemporary Apartments
Brook’s was once a popular restaurant in Oswestry, but after closing its doors, the building stood empty for some time before being purchased by our client. Ke-design was appointed to explore its potential for conversion into a new residential development.
Our initial analysis identified a key challenge: the existing building did not work efficiently from a vertical circulation perspective, making a straightforward conversion into apartments impractical.
Ke-design looked to the service yard to create a new entrance and dedicated stairwell, This not only made the conversion viable but new the vertical circulation near an extension into the service yard would create more apartments.
A key consideration was the building’s heritage value with the existing being a Non Designated Heritage Asset. Ke-design successfully secured planning permission for the conversion, including a contemporary extension and new service core, demonstrating how thoughtful design can unlock the potential of challenging existing buildings while contributing to the regeneration of a previously vacant site.
